GILBERT -- A child was flown to the hospital Tuesday morning after being hit by a car in Gilbert.

It happened at about 8 a.m., in the area of Elliot and Higley roads.

Gilbert police Sgt. Mark Marino said Cole Eaton, 7, was being dropped off at a bus stop by his mother. Cole got out of the vehicle and ran into the street.

He did not see another vehicle driven by Rebecca Howard, 25, of Gilbert. It appears that Cole struck the side of Howard's vehicle and was knocked to the ground.

According to Gilbert Training Capt. Dan Rush, Howard's SUV was going slow at the time and she did stop at the scene.

The boy's injuries are not life-threatening. He reportedly had scrapes and suffered a broken leg and was air-lifted to Maricopa Medical Center.

Police say there was no indication that speed or alcohol was a factor. No citations will be issued issued.
