The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has signed 2009 seventh- round selections Pittsburgh running back LAROD STEPHENS-HOWLING (240th overall) and Cincinnati guard TREVOR CANFIELD (254th overall) to three-year contracts. In accordance with club policy, terms were not disclosed.
Stephens-Howling (5-7, 180) played in all 13 games last season as a backup to Eagles second-round choice LeSean McCoy. Stephens-Howling rushed for 312 yards on 77 carries (4.1 yard avg.) with five touchdowns and added 493 yards on 23 kick returns (21.4 yard avg.). The Johnstown, PA native finished his college career with 1,959 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 429 carries. He also added 52 receptions for 453 yards and a touchdown to go along with 775 yards and one touchdown on 34 kick returns (22.8 yard avg.).
Canfield (6-5, 264) was a second-team All-American and was also named a second-team All-Big East Conference selection for the third straight season as a senior in 2008 as he started all 14 games at right guard and helped anchor the offensive line for the Big East champs. He finished his collegiate career by starting in 42 of the 48 games he appeared in, including 39 consecutive starts at both left and right guard.
Stephens-Howling and Canfield become the second and third members of Arizona's 2009 draft class to agree to contract terms after the team previously signed LSU offensive lineman Herman Johnson (fifth-round, 167th overall).
