Former DPS officer found guilty of aggravated assault in wreckPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A former Department of Public Safety officer was found guilty of aggravated assault for a 2007 collision that injured a motorcyclist.
George Aguilera, 52, was off-duty in May 2007 when his car hit a motorcycle on Interstate 17 near Glendale Avenue at approximately 1:20 a.m.
The motorcycle rider was thrown from his vehicle and run over by a tractor-trailer. The victim sustained multiple fractures and internal injuries and his right leg had to be amputated.
Aguilera had been drinking prior to the crash.
"Drunk driving by this former law-enforcement officer caused severe injuries to an innocent victim," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said. "No one is above the law, as this defendant has learned."
Aguilera faces a prison term of five to 15 years when he is sentenced on April 24.
