Woman critical after car plunges into golf course pondPosted: Updated:
SUN CITY WEST -- A Valley woman is in critical condition after her car plunged into a pond at Sun City West golf course Monday morning.
It happened at about 8 a.m. at Trail Ridge Golf Course near R.H. Johnson Boulevard and Grand Avenue.
According to the Phoenix Fire Department, there was one person in the car when it went into the water. Although the car was fully submerged, rescuers were able to get the woman out of the water.
Firefighters had to dive down once to pry open the door, and then again to unbuckle the woman's seat belt.
The woman, who apparently was the only person in the car, was rushed to the hospital where she reportedly is in critical condition. No other information about the victim was immediately available.
It's not clear how the car ended up in the water, but there were reports that the woman was driving erratically.
A dive team was called in to check the vehicle and make sure nobody else was inside.
Play was suspended at the course until investigators could determine exactly what happened.
