Arraignment today

SCOTTSDALE -- A Valley man will be formally charged today in the murder of his girlfriend's father.

It's not yet known how Walter McCarthy will plead on the charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Police say McCarthy stabbed Vernon Cummings, 83, to death last month in Cummings' Scottsdale home.

McCarthy then allegedly tried to attack his girlfriend, Cummings' daughter. She, however, fought him off and ran to a neighbor's house to call the police.

While investigators do believe McCarthy is responsible for the deadly stabbing, they do not know what his motive was.
