House calls make a comeback with new Valley servicePosted: Updated:
9 p.m. Extra: Doctor House Calls
Most of us are not old enough to remember the good ol' days when doctors made house calls but if you think those days are long gone...think again.
Clarissa Thomason is getting the medical care her kids need without ever having to walk out the front door. It is all thanks to a company called Housecall Concierge. She says, "All four of them were sick and I was like, 'Oh no' and I called him.
Rob Porter, with House Call Concierge, told her, "l need you to fill out a simple past medical history form and afterwards we can talk about the kids." He tells 3TV, "When we come it's really what you view what was happening 50 years ago, only it's a little different patient population. It really is the busy moms, the busy professionals and those without insurance."
Physician Assistant Porter started the medical clinic on wheels with his partner Dr. Mike Blumhoff back in December. It is a service that caters to kids and adults 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Porter explains, "We treat those conditions that you most commonly see in an urgent care or a medical clinic." He adds, "We can easily evaluate and treat strep throat, sinus infections, ear infections for kids, bronchitis, lacerations, joint pain, sprains and the list goes on."
In fact, Clarissa says there's all kinds of perks when it comes to having medical care delivered right to your front door. "I think not exposing my kids to the germs and the urgent care and not waiting three hours with screaming babies is great." She admits, "I feel like he spent a whole lot of time with the kids and talking to me about things."
While Housecall Concierge does not take medical insurance, Clarissa says the out of pocket price is very reasonable. She says, "It was actually cheaper then what I would pay with my insurance because I have four children and a $50 co-pay for each one so it was more reasonable for me with the amount of kids I have."
A standard house call between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. is $225. Porter says, "They are a flat rate. When someone gets a house call from us injections are included, therapeutic diagnostics are included as well and our prices are comparable to what you pay cash-wise at an urgent care."
As for Clarissa, just knowing she can call Housecall Concierge anytime is a relief. She admits, "It's a nice security blanket to have that if its 2 in the morning and something is wrong you can call someone and have them come to the house instead of going to the hospital. "
