BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. - Two Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies were involved in a shooting in Black Canyon City Wednesday night.

The deputies had arrived at the Rock Springs Chevron station just off Interstate 17 to meet with a Phoenix suspect regarding a pre-arranged purchase of heroin, according to Dwight D'Evelyn with the sheriff's office.

D'Evelyn said as the deputies identified themselves and approached to arrest the suspect, he drove directly at them.

Fearing for their safety, the deputies fired at the driver, who veered away and drove from the service station on the frontage road, D'Evelyn said.

The deputies gave chase until the vehicle crashed into a fence approximately one-quarter mile from the station.

The deputies found that the driver had been shot. Medical personnel were called to the scene and determined the suspect had died.

Neither deputy was injured during the incident.

The identities of the suspect and deputies have not been released.
