Diocese evaluating 60-year-old Queen Creek churchPosted: Updated:
QUEEN CREEK -- The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix is determining the fate of a 60-year-old adobe church in Queen Creek.
A diocese spokesman, Jim Dwyer, says the diocese is considering options for the old Our Lady of Guadalupe church, ranging from restoring it to demolishing it.
He says officials are still in the evaluation phase.
The church was built by the largely Mexican Catholic community. Work started in the late 1940s and ended in 1951.
The parish stopped using the building for worship in the late 1980s when its modern replacement opened across the street.
The vice president of San Tan Historical Society, Gordon Brown, says Our Lady of Guadalupe is Queen Creek's second-oldest church.
