Metro trains begin testing on north Phoenix linesPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Light rail trains have begun testing on sections of the rail line north of McDowell Road in Phoenix for the first time.
Trains began rolling Wednesday morning along Central Avenue line north of McDowell and could reach the end of the line at 19th and Montebello avenues by Wednesday evening.
Police will be stationed at intersections and Metro workers will be walking ahead of the train during the initial "live wire" test that ensures the electric trains are connecting to overhead power lines.
The new $1.4 billion system is expected to open in late December. It runs 20 miles from the Christown Spectrum Mall in northwest Phoenix, through downtown to Tempe and Mesa.
