Outgoing Ariz. House speaker to head committee on school fundingPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The incoming Arizona House speaker is naming the departing speaker as chairman of a special committee on school funding -- a concern in light of the state's budget woes.
House Speaker-designate Kirk Adams says current Speaker Jim Weiers will be chairman of the new House Select Committee on Education Reform.
Adams, a Mesa Republican, says the committee will develop legislation to increase "transparency, efficiency and accountability" in school funding.
Weiers, a Phoenix Republican, says fixing the state's budget problems is the Legislature's top concern and that he hopes to come up with solutions to the fiscal crisis.
Fellow House Republicans who met after the Nov. 4 election chose Adams over Weiers as House speaker for the next two years.
