CASA GRANDE -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a two-vehicle collision that left two people dead and seriously injured another Friday evening.
According to DPS, a green 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 when the driver, Thomas D. Whitehead, 25, of Shonto, Ariz., drove through the center median into the eastbound lanes of the interstate.
Whitehead's pickup then collided head-on with an eastbound 1998 Ford SUV driven by William R. Bagwell, 29, of Surprise, Ariz.
Both Whitehead and Bagwell died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. Whitehead's passenger, Jacob O. Casillas, was injured and transported to a local hospital. He is in stable condition and is expected to survive.
All of those involved were wearing seat belts.
Both Whitehead and Casillas were Arizona Army National Guardsman.
Whitehead was assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Huachuca as a result of injuries suffered while home on leave from a deployment to Afghanistan with the 158th Infantry Battalion (Bushmasters) of the Arizona National Guard.
Whitehead enlisted in the Arizona National Guard in January 2002 and is survived by his wife, Andrea, their son, Tobias, and twin daughters, Kaliyah and Kylah.
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
