More kids relying on free-lunch programPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The number of Arizona students applying for free lunches is on the rise, but so is the number of parents who can't pay their part.
The percentage of students receiving free lunches in the state jumped more than 11 percent this year to nearly 400,000 kids.
A director at the School Nutrition Association says the number of kids relying on free school lunches usually tracks unemployment and home foreclosures.
Mesa had the state's largest increase with about 5 percent.
