City bus catches fire, closes I-17 during rush hourPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- DPS Officers and Phoenix Fire Department responded to southbound I-17 at Union Hills to a city bus that caught fire on the freeway Monday evening.
I-17 southbound was closed completely at Union Hills around 5pm. At 8:30pm one lane of traffic was opened but traffic remained very slow. All lanes have since re-opened.
ADOT says that the fire likely damaged the asphalt underneath the bus, but should not have damaged the overpass structure that the bus was on.
Phoenix firefighters had to stand back and let the bus burn to remain safe during the firefighting effort.
DPS tells 3TV that the bus was empty except for the driver.
The bus was a CNG (compressed natural gas) powered bus.
