Yavapai County to handle prosecution of StapleyPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The prosecution of Maricopa County Supervisor Don Stapley on charges related to his financial-disclosure forms will be handled by Yavapai County prosecutors.
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, whose office first handled the case, says Monday that the case was sent to Yavapai County in hopes of avoiding disputes between his office and his county's Board of Supervisors.
Stapley is facing criminal charges related to properties and real-estate deals that prosecutors say he didn't include in his financial-disclosure forms. Stapley denied the allegations.
The board had removed Thomas' office as its legal counsel in civil cases. Thomas responded by suing the board.
On Monday, Thomas proposed a mediation to resolve the dispute.
