Ariz. borrowing a budget option for GOP lawmakersPosted: Updated:
TEMPE -- Republican legislators say they would rather resort to borrowing than go along with Gov. Jan Brewer's call for a temporary tax increase.
House speaker Kirk Adams outlined the still-developing Republican legislative proposal for balancing the next state budget on Thursday. He says a tax increase would hinder the economic recovery because it would burden both business and consumers.
Adams appeared with Senate President Bob Burns at a budget summit in Tempe sponsored by an economic development group. Brewer also addressed the audience of several hundred.
Lawmakers and the governor are trying close a roughly $3 billion shortfall anticipated in the next state budget.
