Chandler considers buyout plan

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Chandler is considering an employee buyout plan that's aimed at saving the cash-strapped city nearly $3.4 million next year by encouraging up to 40 city workers to quit.

Chandler would give employees who quit voluntarily five months separation pay and allow them to continue on the city's health insurance plan for a year. The City Council also is considering a separate but similar package aimed at employees close to retirement.

Chandler's projected budget deficit next year is about $21.5

million.
