Driver dies while waiting for traffic ticket

MESA -The following is a press release from the Mesa Police Department:

Yesterday evening at approximately 9:50 pm a Mesa motor officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 5400 block of East Main St. in Mesa.

The driver was stopped for a minor traffic violation as he left the parking lot on the corner of Recker and Main St. The officer made contact with the driver and obtained his license and registration information.

A short time later, it was determined that the license plate on the vehicle had been reported stolen and the driver also had a warrant. Based on the information, the officer called for another officer and stood by with the suspect.

The officer reported that the suspect who was still seated in his car seemed very nervous. As they were talking, the driver collapsed and went unconscious.

The officer called for medics and began CPR on the driver. The backup officer arrived and assisted with CPR until Mesa Fire arrived and took over life saving efforts.

The suspect was transported to Banner Baywood Hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

The name of the driver is not being released pending notification of the Next-of-Kin. The investigation will be ongoing and the deceased has been turned over to the Maricopa County Medical Examiners office to determine the cause of death.
