Child care provider pleads guilty to killing toddlerPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - The following is a press release from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office:
County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Vickie Lashane Porter (DOB9/29/73) has pleaded guilty to First Degree Murder and Child Abuse for the death of 15-month-old Charlene Campopiano.
According to the probable cause statement filed by Phoenix Police, Porter had been caring for the child since October 2007. On December 21, 2007 Porter called 911 claiming the child was not breathing.
Charlene was unconscious when paramedics arrived. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. Hospital staff said the child was malnourished, bruised, burned and had suffered traumatic injuries. Phoenix Police arrested Porter. The Medical examiner ruled the death a homicide and the cause of death as blunt force trauma.
On March 16, 2009 Porter pled guilty to First Degree Murder and Child Abuse. She faces life in prison without the possibility of parole for 35 years when sentenced on April 17, 2009 before Judge Margaret Mahoney.
Deputy County Attorneys Frankie Grimsman and Stephanie Low are prosecuting the case.
Thomas stated, "The dedicated attorneys in our Family Violence Bureau see far too many of these cases. This guilty plea won't bring back Charlene, but hopefully it delivers justice to her memory and to the community."
