1 Dead when ultralight loaded with pot crashesPosted: Updated:
SAN LUIS, Ariz. -- A pilot killed when his marijuana-laden ultralight plane crashed in a field in San Luis has been identified as a Mexican man.
Field workers found the plane in a lettuce field early Monday. San Luis police Lt. Blanca Silva identified him Wednesday as 34-year-old Juan Gabriel Hernandez Torres of San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico.
The ultralight apparently crashed sometime during the night and was found when field workers arrived for work. Silva says several bundles of marijuana weighing more than 140 pounds were strapped to the aircraft.
The crash site is about three-quarters of a mile north of the border with Mexico.
The U.S. Border Patrol says it is the second time in recent weeks that a small motorized glider was used in a smuggling attempt.
