Woman killed, man injured in early morning single-car wreckPosted: Updated:
PEORIA -- One person was killed and a second was hurt in an early morning single-car wreck.
It happened at about 5:30 a.m., on 91st Avenue south of Mountain View. Mike Tellef of the Peoria Police and Fire Department said 91st Avenue was closed between Olive and Peoria Avenue.
The car was heading south on 91st Avenue when it went off the road, jumped the curb and plowed into block wall in a small ditch near an office building.
The 40-year-old female driver was killed. Her 30-year-old male passenger was taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital North Mountain and is expected to survive.
While it's not believed that drugs or alcohol were factors in the deadly wreck, Mike Tellef of the Peoria Police and Fire Departments said neither person in the car was wearing a seat belt.
Tellef said this is the second fatal crash in four days in which the person who died was not wearing a seat belt.
"I can't stress enough: You're chances of surviving a crash are a whole lot better if you have the seat belt on," he said.
The area was closed for about five hours while officers conduct their investigation. The street reopened to traffic at about 10:30 a.m.
