Bill would delay Ariz. deadline on teacher returnsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Arizona legislators are nowhere close to deciding school funding for the next fiscal year. That's why lawmakers are moving to postpone an April 15 deadline for notifying pre-tenure teachers that they won't have jobs again in the fall.
An emergency bill introduced Monday would set a June 15 deadline for districts to tell teachers that their contracts may not be renewed.
Confronting a budget crisis, legislators say they want to provide districts with flexibility while not unnecessarily alarming school personnel.
Lawmakers have closed a shortfall in the current state budget but now face a much larger one in the next fiscal year.
