Free tax help in Mesa to get stimulus checks
Time is running out to claim your money from the IRS. Approximately 9000 Mesa residents who qualify for the economic stimulus payment have not filed a tax return to claim it. The filing deadline is October 15. That is why the City of Mesa, with assistance from the Internal Revenue Service and Mesa United Way, is hosting a one-day event Saturday, August 16 from 8:30 a.m. to noon to help residents complete their 2007 tax form free of charge to get their checks.
The free tax preparation will be held in the City of Mesa Utilities Building, 640 N. Mesa Drive, in the Community Room. IRS-trained volunteers will assist people who receive Social Security benefits; Railroad Retirement benefits; or disability payments, pension or survivors' benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs to complete a 2007 IRS Form 1040 or Form 1040A. No appointments are needed. Residents will be helped on a "first come first serve" basis. The last applicant will be accepted at 11:30 a.m.
Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage earners who usually are exempt from filing a tax return must do so this year in order to receive a stimulus payment. Eligible taxpayers will receive economic stimulus payments between $300 to $600 if single or $600 to $1200 if married filing jointly. The payments will not be taxable next year, nor will they affect the amount of Social Security or VA benefits received.
