Body identified in search for 3 missing in Colorado River

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. -- The body of a teen swept away by the Colorado River while on a church trip was found Friday afternoon.

Mark Merrill, 16, was swept away by the Colorado River on Thursday.

Witnesses said they saw three people jump into the river near Boat Beach and they were last seen being swept downriver.

Searchers found the body in an eddy near Phantom Ranch, according to Shannan Marcak with the Grand Canyon National Park.

Recovery efforts continue for the other two hikers, Merrill's brother, Joey, 22, and Saif Sayava, 16.

The three were participating in a group outing at the Grand Canyon with the International Baptist College.

Pastor David Brock said the other participants were returning to Tempe on Friday.

Water temperatures in the Colorado River in this area range from approximately 49 degrees to 52 degrees.
