Ariz. getting stimulus money earlierPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The state says it is receiving millions of dollars of federal stimulus money sooner than previously scheduled.
Gov. Jan Brewer's office says the final third of the $185 million of so-called "state fiscal stabilization" money due under the stimulus program had been scheduled for release in the fall.
But the federal government is releasing that money now as part of a move to help cash-short states nationwide.
State stabilization money is particularly attractive to Arizona and other states because it comes with few strings attached and is intended to help close budget shortfalls.
Arizona is getting a total of $185 million of state stabilization money, as well as additional stimulus funding for education, health care, transportation and other programs.
