TOLLESON -- A school resource officer was injured in an accidental shooting at a Tolleson school Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened right outside the front gates at Arizona Desert Elementary School, which is near Van Buren Street and 91st Avenue.
As Officer Ray Granillo attempted to open a gate, the gun accidentally discharged. The bullet struck the middle finger on his right hand.
He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment.
Tolleson police Sgt. Lisa Mendoza said Granillo's weapon was in the holster at the time of the shooting.
Granillo, who has 30 years of experience in law enforcement, is listed in stable condition.
Mendoza said the school had a half-day and the students were in the process of being released at the time of the shooting. None of the students were injured.
