UPDATE: Stabbing near ASU aimed to promote street gang

'Victim' and suspects belong to same gang

The following UPDATE was sent by the Tempe Police Dept.:

TEMPE - On Monday, Feb. 16 at 9:40 p.m., the Tempe Police Department received a call stating that a victim that had been stabbed and was on foot in the area of Rio Salado Parkway and Packard.

Police Officers responded to the area and located a male victim who had suffered a non life-threatening stab wound in his side. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the stabbing are still unclear at this point and as such, are still under investigation. The stabbing occurred in the ravine at the base of "A" Mountain off of Rio Salado Parkway on the south side of the street, just west of the ASU parking lot.

About three hours after the stabbing, police located the suspect hiding on "A" Mountain and he was subsequently arrested.

Both the victim and two suspects in this crime were members of the same criminal street gang. The motivation for the incident was found to be to promote a criminal street gang.

The suspects' names cannot be released at this time due to ongoing investigation; however, one was charged with Aggravated Assault and Assisting in a Criminal Street Gang and the other was charged with Threatening and Intimidating and Assisting in a Criminal Street Gang.


TEMPE -- Police are searching for the suspect in an overnight stabbing in Tempe.

It happened near the Arizona State University campus in the area of Rio Salado Parkway and Mill Avenue.

The victim reportedly was alone when he was assaulted.

After the man was stabbed, he flagged down university police in a parking lot on campus.

The man was taken to the hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Tempe police are searching for the suspect. They believe that person left the scene on foot.
