Police say driver was drunk

PHOENIX -- A sheriff's deputy is recovering Tuesday after being injured in a hit-and-run crash.

Jose Torres was off duty and on his motorcycle when investigators say Abel Garcia-Deniz didn't stop at a stop sign and smashed into him at Eighth Avenue and Mesa Drive.

Police say Deniz is an illegal immigrant and was drunk at the time.

Deniz then drove off while Torres laid on the ground, but other drivers followed Deniz and pinned him in until police could arrest him.

"Drinking and driving without insurance and then the biggest one is just leaving me there," Torres said. "I mean humans don't do that to humans. You know what? You're going to be deported, big deal. You just almost killed me, but thank God there were other people there."

Torres suffered a head injury, a broken collarbone and broken ribs.
