GILBERT - An 8-year-old Gilbert girl who was missing for nearly eight hours has been found safe.
Police, family and friends searched the neighborhood near McQueen and Baseline Road where Serena Sanchez was last seen getting off the school bus at about 3:40 Thursday afternoon. They went door to door and even stopped drivers in the area to ask if they had seen the child.
While her backpack was found in a front yard more than a block from her house, there was no sign of the little girl.
The 8-year-old, who goes by the nickname Rena, finally turned up at about 10 p.m., when she rang the door bell of a home in the area. The resident recognized Rena from the news coverage and called 911.
Rena was later reuntied with her family.
While police have not said where Rena was for nearly eight hours, they have said they've found no indication of foul play and nothing suspicious leading up to the incident.
"In instances like this, we take every precaution to ensure the safe return of the missing child to her family," said Lt. Eric Shuhandler of the Peoria Police Department in a news release.
The family is being referred to counseling services, Shuhandler said.
