GILBERT -- A Gilbert police officer was hit by a car Tuesday evening while attempting to close a portion of Ray Road due to a traffic collision in the area.

Officer Ed Miller and another officer had just shut down all westbound traffic at Ray and Lindsay roads due to a collision. Gilbert police Sgt. Mark Marino said Miller was wearing his orange reflective vest while in the roadway attempting to re-route traffic.

Marino said a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Deborah A. Burgesser, 40, of Gilbert, was heading south on LaArboleta. She turned eastbound onto Ray Road and struck Miller while he was standing in the center of Ray Road.

Miller was transported to Gilbert Mercy Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his head and left arm.

Marino said Miller did not suffer any broken bones or serious injuries. He was released from the hospital and should be returning to work in a few days.

No citations have been issued. Police say the case is still under investigation.
