Family: Toddler might have accidentally killed his 9-y.o. brother

FLORENCE -- A 9-year-old boy is dead after a shooting at a home just outside of Florence.

Lots of questions after child's death

Police said they were called out to the home in the new subdivision of Anthem at Merrill Ranch at about noon on Sunday.

While investigators are not releasing many details, they have said the boy's 2-1/2-year-old brother and father were home at the time of the shooting.

An aunt told 3TV's Javier Soto that the toddler might have accidently discharged a weapon, shooting and killing the 9-year-old. Investigators, however, have not confirmed that, saying only that they need to do a thorough investigation.

The students, faculty and staff at the boy's school are mourning the loss of the third-grader.

"From the crossing guard to the principal to the teachers to the staff to the students, many, many, many people are saddened, many, many people -- their hearts are aching," said Dr. Larry Cline with the Florence Unified School District.

Florence is about 45 minutes southeast of Phoenix.
