MARICOPA -- A Wal-Mart Superstore in Maricopa was evacuated Thursday morning after several employees started feeling sick.
A Wal-Mart in Maricopa was evacuated Thursday morning after employees complained of feeling sick from an unknown cause.
According to Maricopa Fire Department spokesman Brad Pitassi, about six employees in the bakery reported lightheadedness, nausea and vomiting.
They left the building and called 911, reporting a gas leak.
Pitassi said 70 to 80 employees and approximately 40 customers were evacuated from the store at Maricopa Road and Casa Grande Highway.
Maricopa haz-mat crews, the Gila River Fire Department and Southwest Gas checked the store with gas-monitoring equipment and found the building to be safe to re-enter.
Eight people were treated at the scene and one person was transported to the hospital for further evaluation and medical care.
The cause of the illness is still undetermined.
