Huge elaborate drug tunnel discovered in NogalesPosted: Updated:
TUCSON -- U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has uncovered another elaborate drug tunnel in Nogales.
The investigation started with a call Border Patrol agents received from a concerned citizen a week ago. That caller reported hearing construction activity through the wall of a building in Nogales.
When agents arrived on the scene, they found to people cutting a hole in the floor. Those people were taken into custody.
Between those arrests and other intelligence, agents, with the help of a construction crew, uncovered a huge tunnel on Wednesday. That tunnel is about 48 feet long on the U.S. side of the border and 35 feet long on the Mexican side. The side walls were framed with 2-by-4 wood studs and there was ceiling construction, as well as a hose to provide ventilation.
According to USCBP, 47 separate tunnels were found in the Nogales area between fiscal years 1995 and 2008. Since Oct. 1, 2008, the beginning of this fiscal year, 16 tunnels have been found in the same area.
