SURPRISE -- The following is a press release from the Surprise Police Department:
On Thursday, March 26, 2009, at approximately 5:27 pm, Surprise Police conducted a traffic stop on US 60 and 193rd Avenue, Surprise AZ, of a mini-van which was being used to transport eight undocumented immigrants. Surprise Police stopped the van, driven by Adrian Zacarias, age 33, of Los Angeles, CA for a traffic violation. Upon approaching the van, police observed that the van seemed overloaded and that some of the passengers were lying across the floor of the van.
The passengers admitted to officers that they had paid Zararias to smuggle them to a location in California. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials were summoned to the scene, where they then took custody of the eight undocumented persons.
Zacarias was transported and booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for eight counts of Smuggling of Human Beings (a class four felony.)
