Homeless shelter resident shoots, kills employeePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that happened near a Valley homeless shelter.
The shooting happened just down the street from the Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) near 12th Avenue and Madison Street.
A sheriff's deputy working nearby heard the shots and responded. He was able to take the suspect into custody.
Kevin Collins, 47, died at St. Joseph's Hospital. He had worked for CASS for five years.
The suspect, who has been identified as George Overturf, 60, is a resident of the shelter.
Investigators are trying to figure out what led to the shooting.
