UPDATE: Friday, July 17: The man who drove his over into the grand canyon has been identified.
Police have ruled the death of 57-year-old Gheorghe Chiriac. A Grand Canyon spokesperson Shanna Marcack tells 3TV he had emigrated from Romania about 30 years ago.
There was no barrier where Chiriac drove over the ledge in the curb between the El Tovar Hotel and the Kachina Lodge. Tire tracks were found in the area.
Chiriac's death has been ruled a suicide.
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. -- Authorities are investigating the death of a man who drove over the edge of the Grand Canyon.
Man drives off Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Shannan Marcak says rescue personnel found the vehicle and the body of a male about 600 feet below the South Rim.
The National Park Service is investigating. Marcak says no additional information was immediately available.
The incident happened around 6 a.m. Monday near the El Tovar Hotel.
