Defense wants 9-year-old St. Johns boy to continue educationPosted: Updated:
ST. JOHNS -- A status conference is set for Thursday afternoon in the case of a 9-year-old St. Johns boy who accepted a plea deal in a double homicide.
The boy pleaded guilty in February to negligent homicide in the death of his father's roommate, 39-year-old Timothy Romans.
Prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of premeditated murder stemming from his father's death as part of the plea deal.
The boy is out of custody while he awaits sentencing, which hasn't been set.
Meanwhile, defense attorneys are pushing for the boy to continue his education. Under the plea agreement, the boy cannot enroll in any public or private school unless evaluations determine that he doesn't pose a threat to himself or anyone else.
