It happened at about 7:30 a.m. in the area of Litchfield Road and Olive Avenue.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, witnesses said a Chevy Suburban was weaving in and out of its lane as it headed east on Olive Avenue. The driver of that Suburban, a 50-year-old man, sideswiped a Scion that was heading in the opposite direction just before plowing head-on into a Chevy S10 pickup truck.

The Suburban burst into flames, but the driver was able to get himself out. He declined treatment at the scene.

The pickup truck was badly crushed. Rescue crews had to rip off the roof to get the 24-year-old driver out. It took them nearly an hour. She was in very critical condition when she was air-lifted to St. Joseph's Hospital.

The driver of the Scion, a 59-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by ground ambulance.

Initial reports indicated that two people tried to flee the scene, but that turned out not to be the case.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office first said they were investigating the wreck as a possible DUI case but deputies determned alcohol was not a factor.

At this point, the driver of the Suburban had been detained but has now been released. Detectives are awaiting his toxicology report to determine whethere he had a controlled substance in his bloodstream.

Olive Avenue was closed between Reems and Litchfield roads throughout the morning. It re-opened to traffic just before 1 p.m.
