Did dogs hurt or try to help elderly woman who fell and died?

FLAGSTAFF - Coconino County sheriff's detectives are awaiting autopsy results as they try to determine what role if any three family dogs played in the death of an 89-year-old Flagstaff woman.

Sheriff's spokesman Gerry Blair says Joanne Bernardi was discovered lying in the backyard of a home in the Doney Park neighborhood at about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday with the dogs around her. Bernardi slept in a trailer behind the house.

Blair says the dogs may have been trying to drag Bernardi to safety after she fell, although that isn't clear. The two Labrador Retrievers and a terrier have no history of being aggressive.

Family members who found Bernardi called for help and she was taken to a hospital, but died several hours later. She had an extensive medical history.
