SAN CARLOS -- Tim Romans was on the phone with his wife stand outside a home in St John's where he was renting a room.

Police say Romans heard a commotion inside the home and was beckoned inside, and then shot by the 8-year-old-boy living there.

Nine days after the double-murder, Tim Romans' friend "Big John" Andreas drove his casket through the streets of San Carlos to his wake at his mother's home.

"Everybody's gotta go, but this man went at 39. Had many hears a head of him, a lot of life." Says "Big John" Adrian.

Romans' is described as a hard-working family man, loving husband, and doting father of two girls, now at Scottsdale Community College.

"He had 3 passions. Daughters, Basketball, and his 'kids'. He was on fire. There wasn't anything he wouldnt do to support his kids." remarks Cindy Adrian.

And when she says his 'kids' she means the dozens of kids in the area Romans helped mentor.

"he's a father figure to my son." Single mom Tina Mull says Romans took her son Dale under his wing.

Similar stories told by many of the hundreds of people who came to pay their respects at the wake honoring Tim Romans.

Romans' funeral is set for Saturday the 15th.
