Taxi driver stabbed in head after picking up a fare

PHOENIX - The following is a press release from the Phoenix Police Department:

This morning at approximately 10:00 a.m., officers responded to an unknown trouble call in the area of 10th Avenue and West Marshall. When officers arrived, they determined the driver of Estrella Taxi was holding a suspect (passenger) that had stabbed him in the head. The investigation also revealed the suspect stabbed the driver's spouse (front Passenger) on the hand.

Investigators determined the taxi driver had picked up the passenger from the Budget Suites on 6th Avenue and Indian School Road. The driver was transporting the suspect to 17th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The taxi driver accidentally missed a turned while en route to the destination when the suspect became irate.

The front passenger, Margarita who was sitting in the front seat with the driver, noticed the suspect (passenger) raised his hand toward the driver's head; he had a knife in his hand. Margarita attempted to block the suspect from hurting the driver however she received a stab wound to her hand. The suspect managed to stab the driver in the head.

The suspect then opened the back door to the cab and attempted to flee. The cab driver immediately exited the cab and ran after the suspect and held him until police arrived while Margarita called police.

The suspect will be transported to the MCSO jail where he will be booked and charged for two counts of aggravated assault (felony charges). Both victims are being treated at a local hospital; injuries are not life threatening.

Victim: #1 Valdimier, Garcia Lopez Hispanic male 36 years old (sustained a laceration to the head, not life threatening)

#2 Margarita, Vazquez- Barron, Hispanic female 33 years old (sustained a puncture stab on the right hand, not life threatening)

Suspect: Andrew, Lee Black Male 40 Years old

A taxi driver was stabbed Tuesday morning after picking up a customer in Phoenix.

According to police, a taxi driver with Estrella Taxi Service picked up a fare at a yet-to-be-determined location.

The customer requested to be taken to the Wal-Mart at Bethany Home Road and 19th Avenue.

While driving, the customer pulled out a knife and started stabbing the cab driver in the head.

The cabbie's girlfriend was a passenger in the front seat and she began to fight off the attacker.

She received mutliple defensive stab wounds. The cabbie stopped the car and proceeded to beat up the attacker.

All three people were being treated by the Phoenix Fire Department.
