Gimme A Break!Posted: Updated:
While most of our dogs and cats get adopted relatively quickly, we do have some whose stay is a little longer than most. The Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA responded to the needs of those animals by creating our successful Gimme-a-Break foster program. This program allows animals who have been at the shelter for a while a chance to unwind by going into a home for a short period of time, usually from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning.
During this time, our foster parents provide a much-needed break from the shelter environment. "Even a small break from the shelter can help these animals tremendously" said Gabriele Warehime, Foster Care Coordinator for the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA. " It keeps up a positive attitude, which is very important to the mental and physical health of an animal."
This positive attitude is invaluable to helping these dogs and cats get adopted quickly. Happy shelter animals lead to quicker adoptions, which ultimately leads to more happy families!
The great thing about this foster program is the time requirement of volunteers. Usually fostering lasts at least for a week, but the Gimme-a-Break program is only a matter of a few days. Even with that short amount of time, Gimme-a-Break foster parents are able to come away with the knowledge that they have helped to improve the life of these precious animals and assist in finding their perfect forever homes.
