PHOENIX (AP) -- Christmas morning brought winter storm warnings for much of northern and southeastern Arizona as the first of two powerful storms moves into the state.

The first storm arrived in northern Arizona on Christmas Eve and the National Weather Service says it has already dropped several inches of snow in areas above 6,000 feet. Heavier snow is expected Christmas morning and blowing snow possible in the afternoon.

The second storm is expected to move in Christmas night and into Friday.

The weather service in Phoenix says up to 3 inches of snow could fall in southern Gila County above 3,500 feet. Several inches are expected in the Globe and Miami area.

Meteorologists in Tucson say the storm will bring heavy snow to areas above 5,000 feet through Friday afternoon.

Travel in the state's higher elevations is discouraged.
