Semi truck fire scrambles eggs, closes portion of SB I-17

NEAR NEW RIVER -- A semi truck caught fire on Interstate 17 overnight, scrambling the trailer's load of eggs and forcing the Department of Public Safety to close one southbound lane for about 12 hours.

It happened at about midnight in the area of Table Mesa Road, which is about 35 miles north of Phoenix.

The brakes on the semi apparently overheated, sparking a fire that extended to some nearby brush after the driver pulled over.

That driver was not injured, but the fire did create quite a mess, basically leaving scrambled eggs all over one lane of the freeway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation initially hoped to have the affected lane open in time for rush hour, but later revised that estimate. All lanes were back open by about noon.
