Severe "microburst" tears down powerlines in Mesa

MESA -- A microburst blew into the Mesa area with high winds reported at up to 60 mph that blew down up to a mile of powerlines along Southern between Higley and Power road, snapping power poles in half.

Drivers trapped by energized lines

The downed lines entangled cars and trapped drivers. One driver trapped under a live wire said that they could see the power poles snapping along the roadway ahead of them. Then one pole came down on top of their SUV.

"9-1-1 told us to wait in the car" Emmit recalled as he sat next to his wife in the SUV.

Power crews worked to kill the electricity to live power lines that had fallen on asmany as 5 vehicles along Southern. No injuries were reported from the incident.

SRP reports that up to 4,300 customers lost power due to the incident.

Southern road between Recker and Power is closed. SRP estimates that repairs will take at least 24 hours and the road may be closed for days while they work on the downed power lines and power poles.
