22-Yr-old man dead after hit and run on New Year's DayPosted: Updated:
MESA - A man is dead following a hit and run shortly after New Year's Day.
Mesa police tell 3TV a 22-year-old man was killed after being struck by what witnesses describe as a red or maroon van with tinted windows.
The fatal incident took place at 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Center and University. Police say the man was walking eastbound on University when he was struck from the back by the eastbound van.
The victim was taken to Maricopa Medical Center where he died a couple of hours later.
Witnesses say the driver of the van slowed down before turning northbound onto an unknown side street and fleeing the scene. The license plate was not recorded by witnesses and a description of the driver is also unavailable.
The investigation is ongoing. Police have not released the victim's identity as they are attempting to locate a next of kin.
