Man pleads guilty in alleged DUI wreck that killed 3Posted: Updated:
UPDATE: Juan Loera, 20, pleads guilty to three counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault. He will be sentenced October 28.
PHOENIX - Three people are dead and another three people were injured after a car and an SUV collided in an early morning accident at 87th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.
According to Phoenix police, witnesses told officers that around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Juan Loera, 20, was speeding down Lower Buckeye Road in a blue Acura.
The car struck a white Murano that was turning from 87th Avenue onto Lower Buckeye Road.
A 3-year-old boy and passenger Blanca Garcia were ejected from the SUV and died on scene.
The driver of the SUV, Laura Hernandex-Urbina, 33, was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Melky Munoz was also riding in the SUV and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Andres Chacon, 19, was the sole passenger in the Acura and was also pronounced dead on scene. Loera, the driver of that car, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Roads in the area were closed for much of Saturday morning.
Police continue to investigate the accident, but believe that alcohol and/or drugs might have been a factor.
