Driver reaching for cell phone charger crashes into van, killing 1Posted: Updated:
Multiple medical helicopters called to scene
BUCKEYE -- One person was killed Thursday night when a pickup truck hit a minivan carrying a family of five in Buckeye Valley.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, a 2002 Chevy pickup was traveling westbound on Beloat Road just east of 207th Avenue when it crossed the centerline and hit a 1996 Toyota minivan head on.
MCSO Deputy Lindsey Smith said the two vehicles collided when the truck driver, John Dieu III, 22, reached for his cell phone charger and crossed the centerline.
There was a family of five in the minivan -- a mother, father and three children ages 4 to 13.
The woman driving the van died at the scene.
Five medical helicopters landed on scene and transported the injured to Valley hospitals.
One child remains in very critical condition and the other victims are stable.
The suspect had non-serious injuries.
According to MCSO, prescription drugs may be a factor, but that will not be conclusive until test results and further investigation is completed.
