Fundraising at a standstill for Arizona's centennialPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Fundraising is at a standstill for Arizona's plans to commemorate its first 100 years of statehood.
Officials say there are almost no funds for the centennial celebration in next year's budget and nothing is being raised by the agency in charge of planning the event.
Organizers say they also were hampered by the departure of former Gov. Janet Napolitano and competing visions for celebrating the historic milestone.
Karen Churchard, who oversees the Arizona Centennial Commission, estimates planning is six months behind schedule, though she expects a renewed push in coming weeks will spur progress.
Arizona is preparing to mark its centennial in the months leading up to and beyond its anniversary date on Feb. 14, 2012.
