Avondale family gathering ends in fight, gunfire

AVONDALE -- A family gathering in Avondale ended with bullets flying and two people in the hospital.

Family members struggled over gun

Police said they were called out to a home near Van Buren Street and Avondale Avenue at about 10:30 Tuesday night.

When officers got to the house, they found two victims who had been shot.

One of the victims had been hit in the chest. A bullet grazed the other person's head.

It all began when two family members who do not live at the home reportedly started arguing.

"During the argument, one of the persons pulled out a gun a started shooting," said Sgt. Albert Bates of the Avondale Police Department. "A fight ensued over the gun, in which the other victim got grazed by a bullet to the head."

One of the victims was air-lifted to the hospital. The other was taken by ground ambulance. Both of the wounded, one of whom is believed to be the shooter, are reportedly in stable condition.

Police have not released the names of anyone involved in the situation.

The investigation is ongoing.
