Ariz. considers using inmates to clean Capitol to save moneyPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The state's considering using inmates for custodial services at the Arizona Capitol in an effort to save money.
The proposal would turn convicts into custodians at the Arizona House and Senate, among other buildings at the Capitol.
It follows layoffs at the Department of Administration that will see 20 full-time custodians losing their jobs.
The proposal, however, is raising eyebrows among lawmakers.
Democratic Sen. Rebecca Rios of Apache Junction told her colleagues that she worries about sharing the building with jailbirds turned janitors.
